It reminds me of a cross between a fencing jacket and a chef's tunic or coat. It is made out of what appears to be a fairly heavy homespun cotton canvas. The fabric content is 55% ramie 45% cotton. The color is somewhere between a bright white and an off white, ivory or ecru. Structurally, the jacket has at least three features that are worthy of mention: its very unusual overall silhouette; the asymmetric, diagonal line of buttons down its front; and the cut-outs on both its front and the back.In turn, its silhouette is the result of four other noteworthy features: the jacket's highly unusual collar, its very broad shoulders, its dolman sleeves, and, finally, its wasp waist. The collar is particularly avant garde and difficult to describe. It is somewhat like a shield that is held up to the face and covers the neck in front, but does not provide any cover or protection in the back of the neck. Perhaps, it should be called a demi- or semi- raised or high collar, which covers the front but not the back. In addition to the above features, there is one pocket on the right front of the jacket and a self-belt or loop on the left front - almost like a small and short workman's belt.
By the way, you don't need to challenge someone to a duel to wear this jacket. You just need to be willing to be noticed! Approximate Measurements of the Yohji Yamamoto fencing jacket. Shoulder to Shoulder (Drop Shlders): 21 1/2 inches. Underarm to Underarm: 22 1/4 inches.
One-Way Across the Waist: 15 1/2 to 16 inches. Sleeve Length From Drop Shoulder to Sleeve End: 22 inches. PLEASE NOTE: Although exquisite in my view, this is an old jacket and its age is beginning to show a little bit in the fabric. In particular, there are three very, very small age spots in the cotton. They can only be noticed on very close inspection or if you are specifically looking for them, but they are there. Those spots are on one of the jacket's shoulders. Since I believe the spots are a natural result of the aging process of the cotton, rather than stains or a spill, it might be possible for you to arrange with a good tailor or laundry to bleach the three spots so that they cannot be noticed even on close inspection. I have no idea whether that can be done nor what it would cost.
But it seems logical that it should be feasible. I never felt the need to give such a procedure a try, but if you are a perfectionist, you might make a different decision. Both the more traditional Dior fencing jacket and the very non-traditional, somewhat abstract Yohji Yamamoto jacket listed here are stunning, in my opinion.
